Thor: The Dark World Review

Marvel Cinematic Universe experienced a real boom of late, with Avengers being the third highest grossing movie in the world, and Iron Man 3 being the fitfth. Does Marvel continue to deliver amazing superhero movies like in the past? Today, we are going to ask that question about Thor: The Dark World.

This film is surely a spectacular movie, whirling with mind-blowing effects and epic scenes. But also, I feel it lacks any form of originality, any rememberable scenes, or any awesome characters (except Loki). It tries to trigger our emotions with sad scenes, but ultimately fails at it, since the focal characters in them are just side stuff, or because we know they are going to survive anyway. And sadly, I was right, they are.

I love superheroes and their movies, but I think Marvel has gone to the repetitive side, where they just throw unremarkable movies at us, and from time to time, a great one (yes, Avengers). The villain in this movie is one of the most boring movie villains I have ever seen. He doesn't talk much, he just has an evil look on his face and fires reddish deadly substance, which is, we are told, one of the most powerful weapons in the universe, but it won't do all that much in the end.

And I have no idea what does Marvel have with their „stuff humor in everything, so the kids also have fun“ policy. I mean, this is God of Thunder. Big, serious, strong, badass, and lighting shooting. There are few scenes, where it just felt they are mocking their central character and making him look funny. Thor is not a laughable creature, is he. And, well, except few good jokes (Captain America one) they all just felt forced and degraded the experience. Superhero movies are not comedies, Marvel, please.

The only real stand-out from actors was Tom Hiddleston, whose performance was just great and he stole the focus in every scene he was in. Chris Hemsworth seconds him, and while his performance seemed to me kind of „whatever“ style, (in Rush he was much better) it's still not that bad at all. Natalie Portman got more importance in this movie, but she still doesn't seem interesting (even her best friend I liked more). Anthony Hopkins is of great as alway as Odin, but doesn't get much space to show his skills.

Verdict: 7/10

If this all seemed like I am hating the new Thor to a great degree, it's still not that bad. It is on par with quality of the first movie, but against Iron Man 3 (which I really liked) or Avengers it feels like just a filling before the new Avengers 2 come kicking in 2015. But still, it is not the worst film in the Cinematic Universe by far.

So, if you want to go to a family-friendly superhero movie and you don't mind the bad humor and boring villain, it is a movie made just for you.
